03/08/2010 Nutrition: The Devious Bastard

Whom ever was the individual who said ignorance is bliss never dabbled into the hell that is nutrition. Nutrition is easy they say, teach the four basic food groups and portion control and you will be fine. Genius words some say; the ignorant proclamations of self-appointed experts say others. I once too believed that the wonders of nutrition were discovered and neatly sorted into carefully categorized guidelines for both the exceptionally bright and the lay person. Naivety is the hallmark of youth such as mine. I have learned that the facets of which enters the mouth is far more daunting than I once assumed.

When it comes to proper nutrition, I can only give you some of the facts that seem to hold true and prove profitable in one's efforts.

1) processed sugars and additional salts prove very unhealth and counter productive in one's bodybuilding and health afforts when consumed in moderate to excess amounts.

2) Protein is essential to one's diet and proves to have more good than harm when consumed in larger than recommended amounts. Protein is not the only nutrient, but it should not be consumed from frivolous sources. Lean protein sources like turkey, chicken, lean cuts of beef and fish.

3) Water is essential in good health and best results in the gym.

4) Omega 3 is very productive in the efforts recovering from a workout and keeping your vascular system healthy.

5) Lowering calories is the single most effective way to lose body fat. Increase your caloric intake gradually as you progress in the gym gradually so your body will have all of the resources available for increasing muscle mass.
